Developing Android Application with Flex 4.5
The Android mobile operating system was first introduced in the fall of 2008 as part of the G1 handset. Android began to gain some momentum as major device manufactures like Motorola, HTC, Sony, and Samsung adopted Android to run on their hardware. As the number of available devices began to grow (allowing mobile customers a wide range of choices), the number of Android handsets being activated each day increased dramatically. Android’s operating system continued to evolve through versions 1.0, 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.1—and then 2.2, which was the point at which Adobe AIR became available within the Android market. The number of Android devices running 2.2 or higher continues to grow, which means that the user base for applications based on the methods discussed in this book is also expanding.
This book will walk you through the creation of your first Adobe AIR application using the Flex 4.5 framework, and provides examples of how to interact with the device’s many components and features. These include GPS, the camera, the gallery, the accelerometer, the multitouch display, the StageWebView, operating system interactions, and more.

Developing Android Applications with Adobe AIR
The proliferation of the cellular phone has revolutionized the way we connect to the world and communicate with one another. It is the foundation of a mobile lifestyle. Although the evolution of cell phone technology is progressing thanks to hardware manufacturers and platform engineers, the unveiling of its potential is in the hands of application creators. Toward that end, Google and the Open Handset Alliance have developed Android, an operating system that runs on many mobile devices. Adobe and the Open Screen Project offer AIR as a development tool for various mobile systems. Both efforts bring some uniformity to this fragmented world. This book is about developing for the Android platform using Adobe AIR. My goal is to provide in-depth information on the various topics specific to mobile development. My wish is that this book will help you create quality applications.

Learning About Android
This book sprang from years of delivering the Marakana Android Bootcamp training class to thousands of software developers at some of the largest mobile companies located on four continents around the world. Teaching this class, over time I saw what works and what doesn’t. This book is a distilled version of the Android Bootcamp training course that I developed at Marakana and fine-tuned over numerous engagements.
My background is in Java from back before it was even called that. From the beginning, I was very interested in embedded development as a way to program various devices that surround us in everyday life. Because Java primarily took off in web application development, most of my experience in the previous decade has been in building large enterprise systems. Then Android arrived, and once again I became very excited about building software for nontraditional computers. My current interests lie in using Android on devices that may not even resemble a typical phone.
This book teaches anyone who knows Java (or a similar language) how to develop a reasonably complex Android application. I hope you find this book fairly comprehensive and that you find the example-based learning reasonably motivating. The goal of Learning Android is to get you to think in Android terms.
